This one is a very engaging app and children in my therapy sessions love it!

✅3 reasons why I recommend this:

⭕️ It’s a slow paced app.
⭕️ You can use it to suit the child’s skills (early words, early sounds, waiting & joint attention)
⭕️ The peekaboo element creates a surprise every time! All kids love it!

❌ 3 things you MUST NOT DO while using this app!
1. Hand over the tab or iPad to the child and let them be. (It requires interaction with an adult in order to learn the words & sounds)
2. Over use the app to make the child say sounds.
3. Keep using the app even when the child is not showing any significant progress.

Reminder: The app can encourage or motivates a child to imitate sounds/ words. But using the sounds & words meaningfully & generalising them can only happen with the right techniques & strategies recommended by a speech language therapist.

Not all children may start imitating after using the app.

THREE reasons why I recommend using apps:
1. They support or augment them to use their strengths for communication.
2. Feedbacks provide reinforcement & motivation to learn.
3. Progress is faster when we combine technology with traditional learning methods.

TWO reasons why I HIGHLY RECOMMEND generalising the learnt skills:
1. It’s extremely important we help a child use the skills they learnt through the app for everyday communication.

E.g If a child can identify pictures of objects in the app, it should be generalised to identifying those using real objects as well.

2. Link between app based learning & real time learning should be established.
E.g the child can sequence “getting dressed” pictures in the app, the same should be used for actual activity of dressing up.

MOST IMPORTANT:
“An app cannot replace a therapist’s guidance & expertise”
The therapist can guide you on how to move further or how to simplify activities based in the child’s level & progress.

E.g Labeling emotions by looking at flashcards is just the basic starting point. You need to go further my providing more meaningful & realistic learning g opportunities.

Did you know Stephen Hawking used a hi-tech AAC (alternative & augmentative communication) device to communicate?
He used a device controlled by his cheek movement and he could write emails and even browse the Internet.

It’s a BIG MYTH that AAC would prevent a child from speaking!
Imagine if a child had difficulty learning to walk, we would provide them crutches or supported shoes. Will they prevent the child from walking?

NO, RIGHT?!

Then why would using an AAC stop a child from talking??

3 ways that AAC helps:
✅Helps the child in recalling and use of the words.
✅Reduces the anxiety related to speaking, which actually helps them learn to speak
✅Gives them support to communicate their needs easily

AAC are of different types:
Hi tech : includes Apps and speech generating devices

Low tech: picture boards, core vocabulary boards, PECS (picture exchange communication system)

A child can use both verbal & non verbal forms of communication together! We all do!

No matter what form we use, COMMUNICATION is a basic right that every child deserves and needs!

AUTISM is life-long. Autism cannot be cured with therapies. It does not need a cure but acceptance of the neurodivergence.

The last post in the series and I had to say it. No beating around the bush.

Although I do understand and feel we need more help in managing the other difficulties associated with autism namely sleep disturbances, extreme sensory difficulties that make daily living activities difficult, to name a few.

Remember we can accept Autism and we can also seek help for things that are very difficult.

Please read the entire thread to understand what do therapies actually help in.

Not all austistic children will need all types of therapies. The need for different therapies will depend upon the difficulty or area of difficulties the child is having.

It’s also extremely important that we learn to embrace & accept the differences. It’s important that we accept we all are different, have different way ways of interactions, have different social preferences.

Today let’s talk about the shame and stigma associated with therapies.

Why does it exist? Why do we feel that someone who needs help and seeks it is abnormal or weak? Why have we made this society to accept beings according to normative standards?

What if we begin accepting each child to have their own learning ability, pace & capacity. What if we begin accepting everyone regardless of what they are or not able to do?
Why is a child’s worth attached to their skills?

What are therapies and what do they focus on?
🟢Therapies are designed to help a child develop optimal skills in areas of motor development, cognition, speech, language, communication, academics and so on.
🟢Therapies do not involve prescribing medicines or any invasive procedures, which means there are no side effects.
🟢Early intervention is known to have numerous benefits for a child which any of the latter approaches mentioned in the reel do not have.
🟢Please note we are referring to therapies that do not force or threaten a child, are focused on cooperation rather than compliance and provide a positive learning environment for the child.
